Health services
Every Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Pro Vest offers foreign women in prostitution anonymous and free medical consultation at our Health Clinic in our Drop-in Centre.
Doctors Birgitte Astrup and Christina Oxenvad can:
Examine for: - Commonly occurring illnesses and pain - Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS - Pregnancy - Abnormal cells - Tuberculosis
Vaccinate against: - Hepatitis B
Answer: - Questions about various forms of birth control and safe sex practices. - Other questions/health issues.
Professional Secrecy All information is treated as confidential and will only be shared with others with the full consent of the woman.
All women are registered with a number to ensure that each woman receives the results of her own examination. The registration includes date of birth and the name used by the woman in prostitution. This is a way of guaranteeing anonymity for each individual.
First Visit At the first visit the woman is given information about the services of the Health Clinic and the procedure of any medical examinations.
If the woman wants to be examined for STDs, she will be offered: - A blood test checking for syphilis, hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS - An urine test checking for gonorrhea and chlamydia - A gynaecological examination checking for vaginal infections and changes.
Vaccination. The doctor offers vaccination against hepatitis B. Three vaccinations are needed for full protection. The second vaccination is given after one month. The last one is given after another six months. The woman is given a vaccination card so that, if needed, she can continue the vaccination program elsewhere.
Medication. Te examinations and the vaccination against Hepatitis B are free. The doctor writes a prescription for the necessary medicine. Normally the woman pays for medicine, birth control, and vaccine other than against Hepatitis B.
Result of examination The woman gets a second appointment a couple of weeks later to get the results of the tests.
Many of the women have a long distance to the Health Clinic and therefore the follow-up can be done over the telephone. A serious result will always be communicated personally by the doctor.
No appointment needed It is not necessary to make an appointment for consultation at the Health Clinic. A woman can just show up during opening hours.
If transportation to the clinic is a problem, the woman can call us and we will find a solution.
